Il Gran Premio del Giappone è la gara che consacra Sebastian vettel Campione del Mondo di F1 per la seconda volta. Il tedesco arriva a Suzuka, sede della quintultima gara dell'anno, con 124 punti di margine sul secondo in classifica, l'inglese Jenson Button. Per gli amanti delle statistiche, a Vettel basta il decimo posto a Suzuka per laurearsi Campione, indipendentemente dal risultato di Button. A ottenere la pole position, manco a dirlo, è proprio il tedesco dela Red Bull, seguito dalle McLaren di Button e Lewis hamilton, e dalle Ferrari di Felipe Massa e Fernando Alonso. In partenza Button attacca Vettel, che lo chiude. Per questa manovra al limite Vettel viene messo sotto investigazione, ma non viene comminata nessuna pena. Succesivamente si registrano i sorpassi di Hamilton su Button e di Alonso su Butto. Verso metà gara, un contatto tra la McLaren di Hamilton e la Ferrari 150 Italia di Massa provoca l'ingresso della vettura di sicurezza.
Nel gioco dei pit stop, ad avere la meglio è Jenson Button: l'inglese della McLaren va così a vincere il GP del Giappone, seguto a poco più di un secondo da Fernando Alonso su Ferrari. Vettel è terzo e tanto gli basta per laurearsi Campione con quattro gare d'anticipo.
Segue l'altra Red bull di Webber e Hamilton. Massa è settimo.
